About Northwestern University, Chicago, IL
Northwestern University (NU), a private institution, was begun in 1851 by a group of 9 Chicago businessmen who wanted to offer higher education to students in what had been the Northwest Territory. Northwestern was located in the simultaneously created town of Evanston, which was named for John Evans, one of the founders. Both the Evanston and Chicago NU campuses are located along Lake Michigan.
Northwestern's Evanston campus is home to most of the school's disciplines, although some departments are located in Chicago proper. Access to Northwestern is facilitated by the Chicago Transit Authority, provider of the area's public transportation. The elevated train line running through Evanston is dubbed the Purple Line, after Northwestern's school color. Use Foster and Davis stations to access the southern end of the campus; the Noyes station reaches the northern end. The Central station puts you next to the NU's football stadium, Ryan Field. Metra, the regional train system, has two stations: Davis Street Metra station reaches the downtown Evanston campus area, and the Central Street Metra station helps you get to Ryan Field.
The NU Chicago campus is found in the Streeterville neighborhood, and is home to the hospital/medical school complex, the part-time business school, the continuing education program, and the law school. These campus entities can be reached via the CTA Red Line, which is four blocks away. CTA and Pace (suburban service) buses also have routes that service both campuses. Attractions on campus include a myriad of Big Ten Conference athletic and club sport events, and fine and performing arts events which are showcased in world-class facilities. These facilities include an art gallery, a concert hall, a theater, and a museum. Attractions include: Grant park, Magnificent Mile, Milkennium park, Shedd Aquarium, and Soldier Field.
